Acclaimed English violinist Tasmin Little helps celebrate 2015 as the ‘Year of Mexico in the UK’ by performing Vaughan-Williams’ familiar piece, The Lark Ascending (which hit No. 1 in the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2014), with the Orquesta Filarmónica de México UNAM (OFUNAM). The Orchestra, making its British debut in July, is the oldest symphonic group in Mexico City with their home being the concert hall of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

Bringing their colourful summer sounds, this programme also showcases some of Mexico and South America’s most famous symphonic composers, like Chavez, Marquez and Piazzolla. With lively melodies and rhythms coupled with their famed sound of sweeping strings and distinctive horns, the Orquesta Filarmónica de México UNAM brings its zeal to Da Falla’s praised Three Cornered Hat as well as Piazzolla’s heart-achingly beautiful tribute to his father, Adios Nonino.

The evening’s energetic tone continues with Mexican pianist Jorge Federico Osorio performing Gershwin’s familiar, but very atmospheric, Rhapsody in Blue. The concert also includes the Classic FM favourite Danzon no. 2, and ends with the riotous and uplifting Huapango, which celebrates Mexican rhythms in all their infectious glory.

This is a perfect uplifting concert for a summer's evening.

The sweep and freshness of his readings made his performance impossible to resist – The New York Times
