Guildford Symphony Orchestra: Russian Spectacular

The Guildford Symphony Orchestra (GSO) end their season with a bang – complete with cannon - and a giant bear-hug of unabashed romanticism from Tsarist Russia.

The programme is packed with thundering good tunes, including Mussorgsky’s Great Gate of Kiev, Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances, and Khachaturian’s Romance from Spartacus. But none more legendary than Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, with its witty quotation of the Marseillaise as a musical two-fingered salute to the retreating Napoleonic forces. GSO maestro Darrell Davison is unique in having a home-made cannon in his garage, which will be strategically deployed to send G Live patrons diving for cover.

Centre stage is Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 2, famously deployed as the soundtrack to Brief Encounter. Tackling this epic work will be young British-Korean pianist Jinah Shim, a regular prizewinner at international competitions, so expect high drama and virtuosic keyboard fireworks.
