Malta Philharmonic Orchestra
part of Guildford International Concert Season 2022/23
G Live, Guildford
Tue 6 December 2022
|SHOW INFORMATION||PRE-SHOW DINING|
In perhaps the most exciting concert of the year, we have a visit from the celebrated violinist Maxim Vengerov who many regard as the greatest violinist alive today. It will be a tremendous experience to hear him play the glittering, ethereal qualities of Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto. The first half will also see Vengerov accompanying the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Alexey Shor’s melodious and evocative contemporary piece, Seascapes for Violin and Symphony Orchestra. In the second half the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of principal conductor Sergey Smbatyan will play one of the most popular of all symphonies – Rachmaninov’s deeply romantic Symphony No. 2. The premiere of his first symphony was a disaster and Rachmaninov fell into a deep depression, unconvinced of his compositional abilities. The Second Symphony took many revisions, but the finished work was premiered in 1908 to great acclaim, re-establishing his self-belief as a symphonist. The unmistakable romanticism of the work is one of the main reasons for its widespread and continued popular appeal.
