Guildford Symphony Orchestra Presents
Beethoven’s Choral Symphony

G Live, Guildford

Sat 16 November 2019

Guildford Symphony Or: Beethoven’s Choral Symphony

Guildford’s own orchestra celebrates its centenary in grand style with a performance of Beethoven’s monumental 9th Symphony. Quite simply one of the most iconic works in the repertoire which threw down the gauntlet to future generations of composers. Every movement is reconceived on an epic scale.

The most audacious coup of all is the melding of orchestra with choir for the finale, a series of variations on a setting of Schiller’s Ode to Joy, ending as the massed players and singers restate the theme of universal brotherhood in an exultant, ecstatic blaze of sound.

The GSO will be partnered for this concert by Guildford Choral Society. These two pillars of Guildford’s musical life performed together when the orchestra was founded in 1919, so it is fitting that they are reunited for the festivities 100 years on, which will also feature Wagner’s Meistersingers overture, and the very apotheosis of celebratory music, Handel’s Zadok the Priest.

Violinist Joo Yeon Sir will perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor. She is one of GSO’s favourite performers, a winner of our Una Clark Young Artists’ competition in 2014 who is enjoying a meteoric career as soloist and composer.
